The name of this painting ‘Dunyâ’ (دُنْيا) translating from Arabic as ‘life here below’ refers to its ephemerality. It is represented by the diversity of the two landscapes, in the centre of the painting, showing the splendour of creation around us. They are set inside an hourglass, the most important element in the work, evoking the passing of time and showing that everything around us is doomed to an ineluctable end.
