Facing his nafs

This painting represents the struggle against oneself. The term "Nafs" (نَفْس) comes from Arabic and could be translated as the ego, the bestial soul of a person. It is this soul that we fight against so as not to succumb to our desires and temptations, which are sometimes unhealthy or harmful to us.
