The name of this painting, "Dunya" (دُنْيا), which translates from Arabic as "life here below," refers to its ephemeral nature. The two landscapes, at the center of the painting, show the splendor and diversity of creation around us. They are placed inside an hourglass, the most important element of the work, evoking the passing of time and showing that everything around us is doomed to an inevitable end.
